Leipzig’s music festivals: Wagner, Bach & Gothic rock
Enjoy an eclectic smorgasbord of festivals in the city of music: Leipzig Opera will be the only German theatre this year to stage Wagner’s 4-opera Ring cycle (5-8 May/28 June-3 July; Wagner Festival: 19-26 May). In May, Leipzig turns into a black, yet colourful catwalk when more than 20,000 “Wave-Gotik-Treffen” visitors celebrate the 25th anniversary of the world’s largest gothic festival (13-16 May). Then, from 10 to 19 June, it’s time for Bachfest Leipzig, one of the most important international classical music festivals. On 24/25 June, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra goes open air with “Klassik Airleben” to celebrate the end of the concert season.

Richard Strauss at Leipzig Opera

Led by musical director Ulf Schirmer and together with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig Opera’s 2016/2017 season focuses on Richard Strauss‘s wide repertoire. The big Strauss weekend from 16 to 18 June 2017 promises to be a special highlight, featuring the composer’s three masterpieces “The Woman without a Shadow”, “Arabella” and “Salome”. The latter will premiere in a new production, directed by Aron Stiehl and under the musical direction of the international sought-after Strauss conductor Ulf Schirmer.

Semperoper highlights 2016/2017
In its 2016/2017 season, Dresden’s Semperoper once again presents world famous operas such as Strauss’s “Salome”, Verdi’s “Othello” or Wagner’s “Rheingold” and “Siegfried”, among others conducted by Christian Thielemann, principal conductor of Staatskapelle Dresden. Don’t miss the Mozart Days (14-28 Apr 2017), starting on Good Friday with a programme of five operas, including a new production of “Die Entführung aus dem Serail“, concerts and further events. Ballet buffs should pencil in November 2016 for the premiere of the classical narrative ballet “Don Quixote“, newly choreographed by Semperoper‘s ballet director Aaron S. Watkin.

Not just a hotel: Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden
World-famous baroque sights such as Semperoper, Dresden Royal Palace and the Zwinger line up in the city’s old town like pearls on a string. Built in the 18th century by the Saxon king August the Strong, the Taschenbergpalais fits right in as part of the region’s history. Enjoy the beautiful 500 square metres courtyard in summer: for romantic dinners beneath the stars, BBQs or as a wedding location. In winter, when Dresden’s Striezelmarkt Christmas market opens, the Taschenbergpalais Kempinski gets into the spirit, too, and turns its courtyard into a sparkling ice rink that can be booked for private occasions. Magical!
